The main objective of this work, part of the elaboration of an reflection about rural term, seeking to identify the pre-notions and esponteneous conceptions that are linked to the concept, and that sometimes hinder interpretations or bies the public policies that deal with it. From a bibliographic review, sought to highlight the genealogy of the dualistic dispute to which the rural is linked. Subsequently, the role assumed by the New State is presented, as an agent with a vision of modernity associated with urbanization, the role of pre-modernist literature in the construction of representations about the rural and rural people, and also, the role of rural sociology as an agent that reified the tendency to value the urban. Similar to this, demonstrates the predominant tendency of territorial planning to reify these dualist disputes, overlapping the urban over the rural, revealing one of the unmet gaps in Brazil's territorial planning. At the end, is presented three currents of thought that categorize this space in Brazil today.
