The INTERVENTION OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR IN THE SOCIO-SPATIAL FORMATION OF THE STATE OF MATO GROSSO

Abstract

From 1960 onwards, the federal government initiated policies to stimulate the interiorization of the population and the economy towards the Brazilian Midwest. These policies resulted in the emergence of new municipalities, new local political forces and finally in the territorial division of the State of Mato Grosso carried out in 1979. Considering the ideas arising from the Developmental Theory and the Dependent Development Theory, this article has as its research problem the following question: How did the socio-spatial formation of the State of Mato Grosso take place in the territorial reorganization of the States that took place by the Brazilian Constituent Assembly of 1979? The objective of the research was to analyze the intervention of the public sector in the socio-spatial formation of the territory of Mato Grosso that occurred in the period before 1979. The methodological procedures involved a qualitative approach to the problem, using an exploratory and bibliographic research for data collection and analysis. With the research it can be concluded that the actions of the Federal Government had an interest in occupying the "empty spaces" in the State of Mato Grosso to integrate the national economies, trying to avoid the overpopulation of some regions, avoid land conflicts in the south of the country and still meet international interests with exports of primary products (grains and meat).
